These were all part of the "deal" arranged between the UK, France and Faisal, for dismantling the Ottoman empire. There was a little problem, though, an important Arab leader from Mecca, leader of the Hashemites needed to be "paid", so they created three countries, Transjordan, Syria and Iraq, to give to his offsprings "kingdoms", completely artificially created. Faisal and Weizman before that time, agreed (and they have a signed agreement to that effect) that a very small piece of the area (Palestine, which then included what today is called "Jordan"), which was of little importance to Feisal be given to Jews to create their own national home. Three years later a good chunk of that promised was delivered to Abdullah (one the three Hasshemite needing to be paid for help in dismantling the Ottoman empire).

All this is water under the bridge, though. If it was up to me, I would carve a piece of Northern Iraq, a piece of southeastern Turkey and a peace of Northwestern Iran (all largely populated by ethnic Kurds) and create Kurdistan. Unfortunately, this is not very realistic now. Now we have to deal with the current realities in the area and do the best that can be done.
