I showed him a small piece of it and he basically said that combining the two types of IC on a monolithic chip was impressive. He worried about volume as GaAs tends to have problems with that. He thought they might come out with the first chip them improve it from there. GaAs does date back as you have noted but still not as common as Si. It would be great to know if Apple or someone like that is looking at it.
