Your statements are not clear to me. What do you mean by gave up? Robert could have money problems, family issues, business commitments, etc. so "gave up" is a meaningless term IMO.

Has been working on it could mean several things. Like full time, part time, even research and idea time or testing time, etc.

To have someone pick one of the two choices is ridicules without some type of background info IMO.
