Frankenberg had taken over for Ray Noorda who had diversified Novell into an unmanageable, unfocused tangle of entities including Wordperfect, Quattropro, Corel and Santa Cruz Operation (SCO). Novell took massive losses on the necessary divestitures. This was at a time when Microsoft and Netscape were in an epic battle for control of the browser and hence access to the internet as it was understood at that time.
I believe Frankenberg is a battle hardened executive who had a difficult job at a time of enormous uncertainty and change at Novell. He is immensely capable and probably did what was necessary for Novell to survive.
His real connection with Wave however, is his long time position on the board of National Semi conductor.
