Companies Aim to Build Devices With Longer-Lasting Batteries; Going Weeks
Without Recharging


...In the meantime, Valence Technology inc., an Austin, Texas, rechargeable battery maker, is working to
improve today's lithium-ion battery. Last year, the company unveiled batteries made from a paper-thin
material akin to plastic. They take up less space and can be molded into shapes, meaning the ceilphones,
laptops and other products that use them could be thinner and lighter.

The batteries also offer a potential safety advantage: They are based on a new underlying chemistry that
will ensure they won't explode into flames if they fail, unlike the sorry experience some companies have
had over the years with defective laptops and other portables...
