NEC Unveils Methanol-Fueled Laptop
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=528&ncid=528&e=1&u=/ap/20030630/ap_o....
TOKYO - Japanese computer giant NEC Corp. Monday revealed a prototype of a laptop computer that runs on a methanol fuel cell instead of a rechargeable battery, and said it will start selling it next year.
A number of other companies are developing similar fuel cells, which promise to power electronics ten times longer than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use.
Also, users will be able to keep operating their computers by replacing the fuel cartridge or refilling with methanol fuel, instead of recharging the battery.
NEC initially plans to introduce a computer with a fuel-cell system able to run for five consecutive hours on a single cartridge of methanol fuel, but also plans to make a PC within two years that can run continuously for as long as 40 hours.
Fuel cells produce electricity without generating pollutants, through an electrochemical reaction that uses oxygen and hydrogen.
Japanese companies are shaping up to be pioneers in fuel-cell technology. NEC rival Toshiba Corp. said in March it developed the world's first prototype of a methanol-type fuel cell system to run notebook PCs. It also plans to commercialize its product in 2004.
Among other leading Japanese micro fuel cell developers are Sony Corp (news - web sites)., Casio Computer Co. and Hitachi Ltd.

New Intel Technology for Mobile Computing
Sunday March 2, 2:30 pm ET
By Matthew Fordahl, AP Technology Writer
New Intel Technology for Mobile Computing Allows Wireless Capability With Slower Battery Drain
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- For years, Intel Corp.'s microprocessors for laptop computers differed little from those powering desktop PCs. At their core, the chips were designed for machines plugged into the wall, not juiced by a battery.
That changes this month as the world's largest semiconductor company ushers a new technology built from the ground up for mobile computing. The result, Intel says, is high performance and wireless capability with slower battery drain.
The technology, dubbed Centrino, is more than a new processor. It combines the energy-efficient chip, called Pentium M, with components designed to work reliably together and ensure the greatest power savings.
Some laptop vendors are sure to grumble, though, about having to include the entire Centrino package in order to use the brand name and benefit from Intel marketing, said Roger Kay, an analyst for the research firm IDC.
Intel already lets vendors use an "Intel Inside" logo. Now, the company will "certify" coffee shops, hotels and other wireless hotspots it deems compatible with the Centrino package.
Vendors who opt to mix Centrino's microprocessor with non-Intel components won't get certification and can't use a compatibility logo to advertise their hotspots.
"The last thing in the world you want to do is say `wireless is great' and then have everybody have a bad experience," Intel chief executive Craig Barrett said.
He said Intel is "trying to be very careful with where we say it will work and under what conditions -- and who we work with to bring the new technology into the marketplace."
Rival chip makers say consumers need not buy the entire Centrino package to get effective technology for WiFi wireless connectivity, which some industry pundits consider the biggest thing in computing since the Internet.
Savvy corporate laptop buyers will likely buy both Centrino systems and hybrids that use Pentium-M along with non-Intel wireless components, said Rich Redelfs, chief executive of wireless chip-maker Atheros Communications.
Analysts say Intel's Centrino blitz could give a big boost to WiFi, which is expanding as cafes, airports, hotels and convenience stores set up "wireless clouds" of connectivity to attract customers and add revenue.
Thanks in part to WiFi, portable computing has taken off in recent years. According to researchers at IDC, worldwide unit sales of desktops computers last year fell 1 percent over 2001 while notebook sales increased 9.8 percent.
The Centrino systems, if they live up to Intel's promises, could accelerate that growth.
Because the video display and other parts of the laptop hog power more than the microprocessor, Intel had to design Centrino to be more than the microprocessor, said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president and general manager of Intel's mobile platforms group.
The chip set, which acts a bridge between the processor and the rest of the system, also has been optimized to conserve power, particularly in how much energy is used by the system's display.
On average, Centrino will increase system battery life by an hour over similarly configured non-Centrino computers, Intel says.
In Centrino's debut, the wireless component will support 802.11b wireless connections, with faster 802.11a capabilities expected in future releases. Eventually, Centrino is expected to be able to roam between WiFi and cell phone data networks.
Breaking with Intel tradition, the Pentium M processor will be introduced at a wide range of speeds, from 900 megahertz to 1.6 gigahertz. Intel has not released prices.
"Mobile has always been a derivative of the desktop, but mobile has very different needs," said Mark Margevicius, an analyst at the research firm Gartner. "Pentium M is grown up. It's no longer the forgotten stepchild."

Toshiba develops fuel cell for notebooks
Semiconductor Business News
(03/04/03 09:54 p.m. EST)
TOKYO - Toshiba Corp. today (March 4, 2003) announced what it calls the world's first prototype of a small form factor direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) for portable PCs.
The fuel cell currently realizes average output of 12 Watts and maximum output of 20 Watts, thereby achieving approximately five hours of operation with a single cartridge of fuel.
Fuel cells are widely seen as a replacement for lithium-ion batteries, but companies working on their development have to overcome the problems of miniaturization and fuel delivery.
Toshiba claims to have achieved this with its DMFC. For the cell itself, Toshiba developed a new material that allows smaller cells, allowing for miniaturization of the cell stacks.
It has also developed a system that allows a higher concentration of methanol to be diluted by the water produced as a by-product of the power generation process.
This technology allows methanol to be stored at a much higher concentration, and achieves a fuel tank less than 1/10 the size of that required for storing the same volume of methanol in a 3 to 6% concentration. The current prototype can operate for approximately five hours on 50cc of high concentration methanol.

Companies Aim to Build Devices With Longer-Lasting Batteries; Going Weeks
Without Recharging
...In the meantime, Valence Technology inc., an Austin, Texas, rechargeable battery maker, is working to
improve today's lithium-ion battery. Last year, the company unveiled batteries made from a paper-thin
material akin to plastic. They take up less space and can be molded into shapes, meaning the ceilphones,
laptops and other products that use them could be thinner and lighter.
The batteries also offer a potential safety advantage: They are based on a new underlying chemistry that
will ensure they won't explode into flames if they fail, unlike the sorry experience some companies have
had over the years with defective laptops and other portables...

So let me ask the easiest questions again -- why do you post on iHub? Is is merely to create disturbance for your amusement, or have you created this (VLNC) thread to discuss this company and/or other stocks?
