Beamer, It would be a good strategy to go the way of Apple computer and have a following of customers no matter how the competitive landscape changes.
There's a big difference between Apple and AMD. Apple's cult following is just as much about pop culture as it is about technology. Just look at how many Apple computers you see in the movies.
AMD's cult following, on the other hand, is simply about technology. Even the animated movie "Madagascar," which was rendered on Opteron machines, has no hint of AMD's involvement except far down in the credits. 99% of the audience could care less if the cute animals were animated on AMD, Intel, Sun, or NASA supercomputers for that matter.
