Rubbish. I'm talking stand-alone programs, not common OS features like file systems, GUIs, or APIs. You consider Windows Media Player an OS feature? I think there are plenty of vendors who could have offered interesting media applications, but what's the point when the end-user can d/l WMP for free? If you look in the stores, there are no cheap media players for $20-50. The only ones offer high end features that are outside of WMP scope and sell for >$100. And this is just one example. The IE browser is another that's popular to dispute (but I guess the good thing is that it spawned a number of free competitors like Mozilla).
All I'm saying is that MS could have released Windows XP without these things and also a Windows XP+ with these included for $50 more. It would have enabled others to create alternate solutions. I don't hate Microsoft for their decision, I just disagree with it and think it could have helped the market if they did it otherwise.
