Your reasoning is circular: since liberal ideals are good, therefore liberals are the only ones who have done good. I'm not saying whether I agree or disagree (since liberal means literally being open to new ideas, anything new and good can therefore be defined at a level of abstraction as being liberal). i.e., since freeing the slaves was a progressive idea, you can say that Republicans, who made up the majority of abolitionists at the time, were liberal.
