Agree, the operative word with respect to Intel/Apple and general penetration of the mobility market is "forced".
Nothing Intel says will matter. The only thing that matters is what Intel is doing --
move Atom from 45 nm at the beginning of 2011 to 14 nm in 2014. along the
way Intel will disrupt the ARM market -- my guess is that the logjam breaks when
22 nm, Tri-Gate Atom ships in volume.
Based on what's shipping the ARM camp is essentially at 45/40 nm.
I have heard Intel use an analogy with bicycle racing. The pack clusters together until you reach the mountains. Well, I think 32 was the first real mountain. Intel flew up. Others are already struggling.
22 is steeper and taller -- double patterning, Tri-Gate, gate last -- and I'll bet the fastest Intel ramp to volume in history.
Intel needs to take a page from Nike -- just do it.
