Zeev, I am not a legal scholar, and it was my opinion based on editorial reading that the settlements were a violation of Geneva Conventions, or at least the issue of legality is a point of dispute. It seems Arab members of the UN have challenged the legality of settlements resulting in several non-binding UN resolutions regarding same. It seems the US successfully speaheaded an examination of legality of settlements, at the UN.
In the 1948, the original mandate called for 2 states, one "Jewish", one "Arab" - encompassing the West Bank and Gaza. The presence of Jewish settlers, many of whom are actually Brooklyn born religious fundamentalists, within and encroaching on Palestinian territories is central to the conflict, and is the cause of much tension. The Brooklyn Bunch, and other fundamentalists claim their right to establish settlements by Torah Law. The limitation of fundamentalism is that we all have to get along in a secular world.
Also, how do Israeli's claim to support a Palestinian state, and continue to support settlements in the West Bank and Gaza? Aren't the settlements "gentrification"??..
And by the 1948 mandate, the West Bank and Gaza were intended to be "Arab" state..... Encroachment on these territories has been, and continues to be a significant part of the overall problem.
