Since memory is inexpensive you might want to get two new 512 sticks. I don't like the way the one you have now is only showing up as 298. But before you buy two new ones, when you get the slots real clean put that 512 stick you have now back in and see what it shows. If it's still 298 I'm thinking it's a damaged module.

"Sort of" is harmless "Sort of". Is a filler. But sometimes, "sort of" means everything. Like after "I love you" or "You're going to live" or "It's a boy".
