Arthur this is what I found out about Skype:

•Skype has produced little net profit since 2003. Last year the company posted revenue of $860 million and $264 million in operating profits, but still had a loss of $7 million. The company had $686 million in long-term debt as of Dec. 31.

Now they were bought for 8 billion. Look at the debt they had. NetCapital is looking in the future. This technology must be very expensive to develope but MicroSoft see a good investment in it.
