Board Member, Two Others Charged in Hospital Construction Extortion Scheme in Illinois
CHICAGO (AP) -- A former member of Illinois' hospital construction board was indicted along with two others Monday on charges they tried to cut themselves in on contracts and took millions of dollars in kickbacks on various projects.
Among other things, Stuart Levine, 59, was accused of threatening to use his power on the board to scuttle a planned $90 million hospital and $23 million medical office building unless a friend got the construction contract.
The friend, construction executive Jacob Kiferbaum, 52, was indicted as well, along with P. Nicholas Hurtgen, a former managing director at the investment bank Bear Stearns & Co. in Chicago, who wanted his firm to provide the financing.
The Health Facilities Planning Board wields enormous power over medical construction projects in Illinois.
Levine and Hurtgen were arrested early Monday. Prosecutors said Kiferbaum will be summoned for a later court appearance.
