Gold and silver are stores of value. Historically, on the average, you can buy the same amount of goods with a unit weight of gold no matter what the current currency price of that amount of goods is.

So, you are correct, you really can't make "profit" off of bullion. You simply trade your currency, dollars, in today's value, into something that preserves your buying power of the dollars you originally traded in.
