Yes, the ACLU serves a good purpose ...
The ACLU defends INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS versus COMMUNITY
RIGHTS. However, from about 1960 to 1990, there
was NO "PUSH BACK" against the ACLU, and the ACLU
was able to greatly exaggerated "individual rights" over
the co-existing rights of the Community. Fortunately, today
there are lawyers who representing the rights of the Community
against the rights of the Individual. This gives a balance.
For example, the ACLU defended the rights of stinky,
filthy homeless people (1) to spend the day in A/C public
libraries, even though their presence drove away the regular
book-reading patrons, and (2) to live in public playgrounds,
even though this resulted in Human urine and feces in the
children's sandboxes.
BOTTOM LINE: The Community has rights also; the
Community built Libraries and Playgrounds for specific
purposes that are destroyed when the ACLU is able to
exaggerate the individual rights of home-less people.
