Clearly it is a beast - the consumption patterns and it's re-enforcing feedback loop normally referred to as the economy. To get control over it is the key, whether it's by removing monetary constraints or imposing them is clearly the debate of a different type -
I only try to imagine how, what remains of this planet, is going to provide as a virtually self-contained spaceship of 6.5 billion souls and then to seriously, without prejudice, try extrapolate the population growth rates, consumption rate and pattern numbers based on just how the resources have been used so far. What will the quality of life be? When my children are my age? Grandchildren? And this is just developing the anthropocentric view....

I would say that the smaller the scale, the more sensitive to the local environment, the more likely resources can be used wisely, and this favors Cyclone technology.
