Founded in 1993 by Richard Shergold, creator of Bert the Bee and his family of entertaining characters, the Be Alert Bert television and video series was originally developed by Be Alert Bert Productions, a Canadian corporation. Richard was successful securing investments to fund the production, trademarks, and copyrights for a television series and line of products that promoted child health and safety in an entertaining and educational way. The existing bilingual (Spanish/English) Be Alert Bert series, targets preschool children and is focused on health and safety issues. It was nominated for three AMPIA (Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association) Awards and won the Best Children’s Television Show award in 1998.

In 2003, Smart Kids Group Inc., a US corporation was formed to fully commercialize the venture in North America and Internationally.
The company has acquired the assets of Be Alert Bert Productions and Smart Kids is now commencing operations.
