We're looking cut down on sugar consumption, lol... Aguave nector is a nice sweetener alternative and helps our brotheren south of the broder. And then there's old fashion maple syrup. But making your own sugar from sugar beets sounds interesting if you have the land and energy to do that.
Well looking at the bad harvest in Russia last year, the floods in Austrialia and Pakistan, and rising oil prices, I'd hoard some flour if you bake your own bread. Basic food prices are going much higher this year in all likelihood with bread cereals likely to get hit hard.
If you are investing based on these trends, a ETF of raw food commodaties should do you well in 2011. I'd stay away from the oil ETFs as contango in the futures market can burn you there as I learned about that the hard way...
