One of the few times any thing was removed from fort Knox. In the second world war tons of silver were removed made in to wire to wind the electromagnets at the Y12 plant in Oak Ridge. fore the manhattan project. The electromagnetic process was not that effective at enriching uranium and was closed down . In the 1960's the silver was returned to Fort Knox. At that time the Y12 plant used more electricity than New York city. They plan to take down the buildings soon. When they were operating they could pull a 16 penny nail from a 2x4 even though it were driven fully in from a distance of 12 ft.
