Ex
Good post. Far as recalls I've been there and done that--rather attempted it. It's a difficult process at best. The media is always on the side of the people you want to recall. We had a liberal woman mayor here in Independence that violated our city charter by firing an honest city manager without a vote of the council. I headed up a recall campaign, rallied our troops and the monumental petition gathering process began.
We finally turned in the required numbers (and then some). They were certified and the issue was put on the ballot of the general election of '88. What with it being a Nat'l election we got a good turn out. Only problem was they mickey moused the wording around to the point if you thought you were voting against her, you were actually voted to keep her in office. She narrowly prevailed, but lost by a landslide in her reelection of "90.
I'll tell you, Ex, I've worn out shoes, spent how many thousands backing good candidates, only to be terribley letdown by the lack of people showing up at the polls. All politics is local. If we change things at the cityand county levels it's easy to get to the states and on to Nat'l. By and large people are only interested in the president.
BAck to the point: I'm sure the opportunity for recall at the state level exists. But you better be prepared for some hard work and a lot of dissappointment. I share your feelings and concerns. The special interest groups permeate all clubs, social groups, and even the churches. Tough fight with a short stick, my friend, but I haven't given up.
Good to talk to you
