With a name that usually refers to moonshine whiskey, Tennessee-born Mountain Dew was first made in the 1940s to be mixed with liquor. Early packaging and ads kept Mountain Dew in touch with its roots, featuring a jug-toting fellow named Willy the Hillbilly and his pig. Pepsi acquired the formula in 1964, and eventually slogans like "Ya-Hoo Mountain Dew! It'll tickle yore innards," were replaced with a more modern approach. In the 1990s, we were encouraged to "Do the Dew," which has grown to include a variety of flavors.
