The other point about hydrogen is that it's lighter than air and burns up into the atmosphere and didn't cook the passengers on the Hindenburg, many of whom survived. At the time the U.S. was the Saudi Arabia of Helium and we wouldn't sell any to Nazi Germany. It wouldn't have made any difference since as the previous post pointed out the real problem was the covering of the zeppelin, not the gas inside. Unfortunately, hydrogen has had a bad rap ever since.
