Oh, come now, ergo. Regan was in office after Johnson's failed policies resulted in Carter Stagflation (there you go again). In constant dollars? Johnson was fighting a war in Asia as well as one at home. I don' wanna buy that loaf of bread. In the Johnson years, a gallon of gas cost 30 cents. A new car cost less than $2,000 (I bought one). My house cost me $14,100. Today, the same car is well over 20 grand, and the same house is worth a quarter of a mil. The gas is a bargain.
Of course, in 1065, I made a bit over $5,000 from my teaching job and two part time jobs. Our grocery bill for a week was about $20 or so, and a new suit cost me $35.
Now, just in case you want to lay blame for all that inflation to Nixon and Ford, just remember that both of them had congresses controlled by the 'party out of power,' at least most of their terms.
When we are comparing budget deficits, we need to compare the effect of inflation as well.
