NVE has a patent, "086", that switches the magnetic state without using a magnetic field.
It uses a spin polarized current that "torques" the magnetic state.
This patent is not specific to VMRAM, it works with any SDT or GMR memory cells.
As of today, and by what has been publicized, it is the only method that has worked in switching the doughnut shaped VMRAM using the current through the address lines, in a CPP (current perpendicular to plane) fashion
The VMRAM is only worked on by the Naval Research Lab, Carnegie Mellon University and NVE. They have worked on this since 1999. The VMRAM device patent belongs ro Dr. Prinz of the NRL. The switching method that has been proven to work belongs to NVE.
This is based on what has been publicly disclosed.
with spin polarized currents...this my friends will entail Intel LICENSING from NVEC their patent on spin polarized currents being utilized to flip the electron spin. But do not take this from me as gospel, you should really listen to Dr. Paolo Gargini-Director of Technology Strategy, Intel Corporation told Josh Wolfe in a publicized interview. I reference the Novmember 2004 Nanotech Report, page 5, far right column. Here is a cut a paste of the question posed to Dr. Gargini and his response.
Might spintronics be the next paradigm shift?
Yes. Once you have one atom for each dimension, moving charges from A to B, like whenever you turn on a switch, the lamp on your room creates heat. There is the possibility of using other properties like electrons which have spin. In this case, you can imagine in a simplified way, if the charge was spinning like a gyroscope, you can flip the spin from up to down, that’s what you do with magnetic dipoles in your hard drive. There is a possibility— still speculative—but possible to have a 1 or 0 with spin up or spin down, and if you calculate the energy of moving from up to down versus moving an electron 1nm, it is easily 100,000 times smaller. UCLA and UCSB are working on this. People have made hybrid transistors. They still had a source, had a drain and moved charges, but instead of controlling the field, they’d move the spin. What I’m telling you is that you could have all the charges sitting there and spin-up/down, and none of the electrons would move, but you’d have a spin-wave propogate. There’d be no resistance because there’d be no current. "
