This is completely outrageous. Is making $80k now a sin or crime? Before you answer, keep in mind that if this recession turns into a stagflation like in the 70's, $80k a year will be minimum wage by 2020. By then you will have another case of inflation causing over taxation like what triggerred the Y2K recession (alternative minimum tax hitting the middle class).
The whole point of lower energy cost, or lower cost of any natural resource, is so that people can afford to enjoy themselves more. Not just driving SUV's, but transportation of goods and services is fundamental to division of labor, the root source of wealth; btw, division lf labor that can lead to prosperity is not the socialist model of assignging people to work, but a democratic and market oriented way of giving choices to every market participant. I can't believe some thinking person would suggest taxation as a way to lower cost.
