The people who complained about this are ivory tower types like Agner Fog. He also railed against: hyperthreading and the instruction set war in his blog. In the real world, if you use an intel compiler you probably will keep using it and you also probably use Intel chips. In the real world the vast majority of pcs are Intel based and you don't de-tune for the dominant architecture.
