the average solar insolation per year in Maine (at 45 degrees N Lat.) is 4.5-5.5 kWh/m2/day- this at ground level, flat plate, facing South, with latitude tilt. I grant you, at this point, collector efficiencies can only deliver 15-20%

But I'll never, ever, loose sight of the fact insolation is absolutely free AND absolutely free of carbon, AND several thousand times what humans need AND it has existed for billions of years.

A several hundred square km area in the Sahara could, in theory, power the world.
