Well, there you go. The cloud can be the solution to the media storage issue. I could have a thousand movies on my iPad provided that I have a nice fast network.
I don't have a desktop Mac anymore, and while I have a desktop Windows machine I almost never use it. In fact, about the only thing I do with it is apply the monthly security patches.
Almost everything I do, I do on my laptop, which has Parallels and several versions of Windows on it.
When I want to go to the coffee shop and hang out though, I take my iPad now.
I don't know what is going to happen to fill in the "big monitor" gap, .. but that's the only missing link that would allow a tablet to totally replace the desktop.
There will still be business, military, industrial needs for desktops, but probably, the desktop will be a tiny box like the Mac Mini, because chips are going to keep getting more powerful. Or it guts will be in the monitor, like the iMac.
Probably, there will still be uses for mainframes.
But the sales trend seems to be moving away from desktops.
