Well, the question was "what do people in your generation use the internet for?", not "what can Desktops do that Tablets can't?"
If you were to ask me, I'd say a tablet PC would be much better than a desktop for self-education (I find I spend most of my internet browsing time on Investopedia, I'd love to not sit in my desk chair for that) and as good as a desktop for social networking (Though nothing really trumps Smartphones for that).
Like I said. I believe the future of technology lies in the Cloud. Cloud computing has proven itself to be a fantastic way to get stuff done. As time goes on, it will only get better, and the possibilities are limited only by what companies are willing to shell out for the hardware.
I imagine a future where companies own huge warehouses full of live hardware for each and every one of their subscribers. In exchange for a monthly fee, people can use their (likely contractually provided) tablets or laptops to access the company hardware for whatever purposes they need. Gaming, working, media. You name it.
I believe that in the future, home floorspace, computing power and the hardware components that are required to be stationary will all be outsourced. We're reaching an age where simply making things smaller can't cut it anymore. I see tablet PCs as a battleground where Performance and Size will fight until the Cloud's true usefulness becomes readily apparent to the world.
