There are at least two credit card reading devices for iphone already, and they can presumably be adapted for the ipad easily, if they are not already:

The Square dongle plugs into the earphone jack, and interacts with an app produced by the company Square. What I've seen online so far makes it look like it still has a few bugs to work out in the app:

Mophie has an iphone case that includes a card slot ("coming soon" according to Mophie website):

I would bet they will have one for the iPad soon, as well.
