far better deal

Exactly what was the Astros offer?

When judging these things, there's no way to impose what would be best for you on someone else because what you value might not be the same as them. Obviously you've got an emotional burr in your saddle about the several years of buffoonery in the Rangers organization and want to play the victim and blame Boras for the organization's own idiocy. Boras may be an ass, but he didn't invade Arlington with an army and hold a gun to their heads. They giant holes in their feet were inflicted by bullets from their own guns.

How much value does a player place on the chance to have a year-in, year-out chance to play for more than money? To have a consistent opportunity to be playing in October? The Astros are a small market team with an aging lineup whose ace had no more than 1 year left. They are likely going downward as the unfortunate economics of baseball would suggest. The Mets, in contrast, have ridiculous amounts of money and on that inequality alone have better odds of getting Beltran into the playoffs the most times in the next 7 seasons. Add in that ownership and Minaya have demonstrated they are aggressive, it's not unreasonable to assume he'd get to play for a ring more often with the Mets.

Now add in the ramifications of playing for a ring in NY versus sitting home in Houston. Post-season money isn't inconsequential and more importantly, the leveraged money that can result from them isn't either. Which brings us to endorsements. Needless to say the same player in Houston doesn't have nearly the opportunity or exposure to those dollars as one in NYC.

There are plenty of other considerations, but needless to say, they differ from person to person.

It's time to get over blaming Boras and A-Rod for the Rangers' own stupidity.
