If Iowa is a net food importer, then this does not portend well for us in the future. I took an Economic Geography class in 1964 and remember how Iowa fed the world with its corn. Times are changing.

The most reliable locally grown organic vegetables comes from my garden, some neighboring gardens, and one local farm. Beyond these food sources, I agree with you that most food is "imported" i.e., overseas and from long-distance points in the United States to my Massachusetts residence.
