I believe terminology changes conotation over time....to that extent, equaling today's liberals with those of the 18th century puts us on shaky ground at best.

right now the far left controls the Democart Party....and, the Democrat Party controls the US government....so, effectively, the US gov. has been hijacked by a group of Marxists...(they like to call themselves progressives)

Who/what is a progressive? the cute answer is someone who believes in social progress and the betterment of the "people"....

reality: redistribution (which covers welfare) programs are steps in the direction of allocation by the ruling class to the masses....that's communism/marxism....

or let's put it this way....IT'S NOT CAPITALISM!

we have two socio-economic directions in which to take this nation...

and to that extent:

we are moving the other way....socialism/one ruling party i.e. towards communism/totalitarianism....

would progressives here rather be called socialists? ok, if that's what they like....make them seem gentler, less offensive....

but, if we observe for ourselves, I think most people (left or right) would conclude from inductive logic that socialism is merely an interim step....it's a modern day compromise between the extremes of capitalism and communism.

neither one, (unrestrained capitalism or pure communism) can exist on a practical or pragmatic basis because the lack of uniformity of world wide socio economic evolution requires each to modify itself.

in other words, unbridled capitallism would result in the "wild west" and communism would not be able sustain/maintain its status quo as pool of human knowledge increases and gives rise to technological advances.....either is impossible....

I'll be the first to admit that capitalism must be modified in practical application or else there is chaos.....

(as an aside: you still believe that this economic crisis wasn't intentionally perpetrated by allowing & encouraging capitalism's unscruplous to "run wild"???)

again, socialism would appear to be the plausible compromise except for the glaringly obvious point that it cannot generate sufficient excesses to simultaneously cope with or satisfy the ever expanding base of "need" and creation of new "wealth"....and, from another view point, that's a usurpation of freedom by limiting or mandating choices.

I'll get to the interregnum....but, IMO....there is a glaring oversight in that concept as it pertains to present day....just as Marx's blunder was developing a theory based on the converse of the reality of human nature...i.e. Marx believed: the masses naturally gravitate towards a state of communism....IMO, totally incorrect!
