You're misapplying trait here. Trait is being used as an indicator for complications stemming from genetic sickling, due to having the positive trait, and suffering from a number of conditions under the umbrella of SCD (sickle cell disease). 'Anemia' is another 'trait' of having the genetic disease indicators. There are several traits. The sickling of the red blood cells occurs within the trait 'group' of SCD, not within the group known as 'trait carriers' or unaffected persons of chromosome mutation. They simply carry the 'defense mechanism' for Malaria by having one paired chromosome.

Yeah...simply having the trait is a walk in the park-just ask the football and basketball players who have succumbed to heat and exercise related deaths who carried the trait---and the rest of these non-sickly people...
