I learned whatever winter driving skills I still have, as a kid in northern Wisconsin. We were taken out to a frozen over farm pond in the family Crosley and required to cross the pond and leave it at a designated spot directly across and then proceed up a snow-covered, crowned gravel road hill. When you could get to the top of the hill without spinning or sliding off the pond or road, you were considered eligible to drive to the nearest store - 4 miles away. I was 9 years old in 1950 when I was authorized to go to the store.

I guess it worked; as an adult in Cincinnati and Wash. DC, I never used snow tires or chains. Eventually my youthful pride subsided and about age 30, I consented to snow tires (and chains when necessary). Having your own kids triggers the growth of your caution gene - I had 3 kids by age 30. smile
