I've recently build a home NAS using Solaris on an Atom board. Solaris is picky about x86 hardware (e.g., NIC drivers) but once I got it up and running it has exceeded my wildest expectations. With Solaris ZFS, you get raid at the filesystem level, checksums, replication, deduping, compression, automatic snapshots, rollbacks. I haven't seen anything like it since 25 years ago when I was working with VMS.
