BUT, I assume, not quite as well, by design, from SUNW.

Maybe but x86 processors outperform SPARC processors
by such a huge degree that x86 versions of Solaris apps will
still run rings around their SPARC counterparts even if the
OS and toolchain optimization isn't as mature for x86.

The primary advantage that SPARC retains is that many ISVs
aren't bothering to create x86 versions of their Solaris apps
because even Sun's own x86 customers prefer Windows or
Linux to Solaris by a large degree.
