Chrissy, you may be thinking of Baker, CA. That's just over the hill from Death Valley. Bakersfield is just off I-5, at the southern end of the Grapevine, on the way to LA

I be know'n California. I even lived in Weed. Yes Virgina, there is a town named Weed. It's not just a California sacrament. LOL.
