Prof, initially that was the intention for domain names but in order to prevent from losing hits companies began to register all of the .org, .net, and .com domains. Why? Well, imagine seeing a catchy ad on TV and you remember the company name but cannot remember the address. Most domain names are simply the company names with the .com, .net, or .org appended. You're sitting in front of your computer with the company name and now you have to figure out whether it's .com, .net, or .org. It's easier for the company to simply register all of the domain names than the customer to try the .net, .com, and .org individually. Also, companies who only registered the .com domains found that third parties registered the .net and .org domains. The third parties weren't looking out for the best interests of the company. An example that comes to mind is www.whitehouse.com and www.whitehouse.gov. A lot of the third party registrations lead to lawsuits/legal threats such as: blockbustervideo.org. In your browser surf to: www.netflix.com, www.netflix.org, and www.netflix.net. You will see all of those domains point to NetFlix's main page.

Have a good one,
Daimoku
