Yes, a judge may hold off on rulings if the parties have informed the judge they are near settlement. Attorneys often approach the bench right before trial to inform the judge they are near settlement, but need an hour to work out a few more details. They sometimes ask the court for guidance, in which they're seeking the judge's thoughts on certain issues, which helps guide them in their talks.
