99% of the small companies do not have much visibility into their roadmap even 3 months out. I have been involved in a lot of startups, and yes, all of them live month to month until they land a big reference customer and they start building out channels. Rule of thumb, from the time your first started selling to the time where you can have accurate, predictable pipelines is about 3 - 4 years. It is just the nature of the beast, and is not a reflection on the ability of the executives/businessmen.
