I don't know about Europe or Japan's single payer system but from what I have read ( Fraser Insitute of Vancouver)about Canada's single payer system is that if the current rate of health care spending in Canada continues, the entire budget of each of Canada's 10 provinces will be dedicated to healthcare within 36 years. Ontario already spends about 40% of it's budget on healthcare with Prince Edward Island (the lowest %) at 30% plus.

Guess the question is how to adequately fund any system.
Some hard choices have to be made as to the limits of healthcare coverage or higher taxes.
