Note there was a failed Phase III trial of a protamine alternative some years back with a compound (Heparinase-I) that cleaved heparin. The presumed reason for failure is that the cleaved heparin acted like a LMWH, although for the life of me I don't know why that wouldn't have shown up in earlier trials.
