Utimaco Says IBM to Sell Its Security System Under New Accord

Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Utimaco Safeware AG, a German maker of security software, said International Business Machines Corp. will sell some of its products as part of a partnership agreement.

The company expects a ``sizable'' increase in sales from the accord with IBM, Utimaco Chief Executive Officer Martin Wuelfert said in a telephone interview. IBM, the world's biggest computer maker, will offer Utimaco's hard-disk encryption software to customers worldwide as part of a computer security package.

``We expect to see a clear impact on our sales starting in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year,'' Wuelfert, 38, said. ``Business is already warming up and has showed the first results.'' German bank LBS Norddeutsche Landesbausparkasse became a customer through the companies' new accord, Wuelfert said.

Utimaco, based in Oberursel near Frankfurt, is counting on rising awareness of security issues to boost sales. Only 10 percent of laptops used professionally have software to protect them and about 500,000 laptops are stolen in the U.S. every year, Wuelfert said.

Utimaco's fiscal year ends on June 30.
