"The California electricity crisis and the national gas crisis are not quite related. I definitely do not think the California energy crisis had anything to do with excessive profits or price gouging. Just the opposite."
The cost of natural gas has a great deal to do with the cost of producing electricity. I read in the times where they are paying 43cents for the same amount of natural gas that they paid 5 cents for a year ago to produce the same ammount of energy. By regulating what the retailers could pass on to the public it put them in a deficit opperating position as the wholesalers were passing these cost on to the retailers. If there were really a natural gas shortage on those levels Southwest gas would begging to raise my residential rates and so far I've heard nothing. It's a scam. Thae same money that owns the big oil Cos. Own the big utilities. I was part owner and operator of a gas well over in Eddy county New Mexico. Ammoco owned the other part. Southwest gas told me due to a surplus they were going to have to shut my well in and take it off line. Immediately Ammoco made an offer to buy my part, at a priemum, without any income from this well there was no way I could afford to pay for the drilling and production cost. Eventually it was either sell the well or lose it to the bank. As soon as I sold the well to Ammoco, Southwest put it back on line and Ammoco has since made millions off that well. Don't tell me about the virtues of free enterprise. I've seen it up close and real personal.
