This past non-summer, summer was cool and rainy. The yields of my tomato plants were probably one-third than usual. I did not resort to spraying to protect the plants from blight.
About a month ago, a friend, Bruce, gifted me with a large bucket of straw. I did not cover the bucket and after a week of rain, I noticed the accumulation of water in it.
A few weeks ago, I began putting buckets below the awning of my back door and the collection of rain was impressive.
Yesterday on this board, I added two posts about rain barrels.
A good friend, Patrick, who could be on the TV program Survivorman, offered to set up a watering collection system. All I had to do was level off the land which would house the cinder blocks.
Following is a picture of the system we set up this morning. All parts were bought from Home Depot including a one-inch drill bit to drill holes into the barrels for all of the parts and tubing shown in the picture below. The bit was still a little small, so the drilling was done a few times around the perimeter to get the right fit.
As I was writing this message, there was a downpour for just a few minutes to fill up one-third of the first barrel. In the next few days, the second barrel should be filled and a hose is now attached to drain the overflow water into a garden bed.
The water collection system proved to be the highlight of an otherwise dismal growing system.
