If a person is under the direct supervision and control of her employer, then she is an employee and, thus a W-2.
My bet is there is a room at one of the MM's office with coffee and donuts (lots of donuts), multiple keyboards and monitors, and all the head cheeses are there rooting their 'employees' on! Room full of employees!!!!!
Wonder if the chairs are comfortable??
