I uninstalled firefox (and trashed the favorites also - the first time I tried it I left the favorites and the bug returned when I reinstalled firefox.)
I cleaned the registry of everything that had to do with firefox.
I then cleaned all junk files, and defragged.
All of the above was done with system restore off.
Then reinstalled firefox and the bug seems to be gone.
What was interesting was the bug would not appear if I opened firefox from within outlook by clicking a link. But when I opened it from the start menue, as I said earlier, it would open a tab to my home page and simultaniously open another tab to the web site.
The problem started after I had clicked on the site.
In any event, things are back to normal.
I stumbled upon a new (to me) protection suite called G Data total care. I did not identify the original bug.
They seem to have good reviews and a 30 day triel after which the program is 40 bucks. I ran it and found a trogan in an old email in outlook that my other security programs had overlooked.
