I don't think it's a choice brokers have, certainly not if the company asked. Anyone could call up and say "I have shares held in XYZ brokerage", the company would have to have some way of verifying. And I can tell you I've gotten calls from at least half a dozen companies in which I held shares, all in street name over the last 5 years, to the point where it became a nuisance, saying "It's important that you vote on ...". So they certainly had my name and phone number.

Bottom line, I can't imagine a public company NOT knowing who its shareholders are. There's probably a delay in reporting and maybe they have to ask, but I find it hard to believe all they know is that xyz brokerage holds x shares.
